PNG files keep every detail, but they are large. A PNG screenshot can easily be 3–6 MB, while the same image as JPG is often 400–900 KB.
Smaller JPG files send faster, use less mobile data and upload quickly to email, Instagram and websites.
On WhatsApp, a PNG sent as a photo is turned into a compressed JPG anyway. Converting it yourself at high quality first keeps it sharper.
JPG uses lossy compression, so a tiny amount of detail is always lost. At 90–95% quality the difference is very hard to see, and the file is usually much smaller.
Quality loss becomes visible below about 70%. For photos, 85–90% is the sweet spot. For screenshots with small text, logos or sharp lines, use 95%.
JPG does not support transparency. Transparent areas become white, or any colour you choose in the tool. If you need the transparent background, keep the PNG.
